March 2006 Conference Call
ACM History Committee March 2006 Conference Call

    March 23, 2006 4-5:00 EST

Present: Bill Aspray, Mary Hall, Carol Hutchins, Mike Mahoney, Rosemary McGuinness, Joe November, Len Shustek, Rick Snodgrass, and David S. Wise.

  1. Status on open items

    1. web site

Joe plans to have the entire web site up on April 1, at the agreed-upon URL.

    2. Interactions with SIGs

Mary subsequently sent Newsletter #1 to the SIG chairs on March 24.

    3. Turing web site

David reported that he talked with Mark Mandelbaum. By June 30 Mark promised a design of the Turing page, the pages for the last five Turing awardees populated, including whatever interviews are available (interviews will appear in the DL as "papers"), pictures, links, and the extended citation.

This will be subsequently backfilled to include all Turing Award winners and ACM presidents, in a consistent format and level of detail.

  2. Interviews

    1. Status

Rick previously sent out the status. A summary is repeated here.

      ACM Presidents:

      Franz Alt, by Atsushi Akera
      Walter Carlson, by Tom Haigh
      Bernie Galler, by Atsushi Akera
      Harry Huskey, by Bill Aspray
      Anthony Oettinger, by Atsushi Akera
Tony Ralston, by Bill Aspray and Bernard de Neumann
      Jean Sammet, by Tim Bergin

      Turing Award winners:

      Richard Karp, by Tom Drucker
      Robert Tarjan, by Tom Drucker
      Charles Bachman, by Tom Haigh

The Committee discussed possible future interviews.

    2. Deadline for transcript editing

We have had little to no leverage to encourage interviewees to rapidly edit the transcript. But we would like to post interview transcripts in the DL.

Our new policy is that we will post to the ACM DL whatever we have three months after the interviewee receives the initial transcript draft, with an indication of "has not been edited by the interviewee", then replace that with the final version whenever it is received, removing that proviso.

Our next conference call is Thursday, April 20.
