March 2007 Conference Call
ACM History Committee March 2007 Conference Call

    March 29, 2007, 4-5:05 EDT

    Present:
Bill Aspray, Mary Hall, Mike Mahoney, Len Shustek, Rick Snodgrass, and David S. Wise.

  1. Interviews

  2. Rick reported that to date $23,350 has been paid out of the HC budget for interviews, including $3500 in this fiscal year. All expected expenses for the FY have been paid except for $2K in advances. We've been very careful to minimize expenses, such as splitting interviews with SIAM, SIGs, and CHM and accepting the kind services of some volunteers.

  3. Budget

  4. Neither AFIPS nor the ACM Archive, both discussed below, are part of that budget.

  5. AFIPS

  6. David reported that he has been talking to Mark about the AFIPS papers. Apparently this has an orphaned copyright. It appears that Mark will bring a proposal to Council in June.

The HC had previously voiced its strong support for putting the AFIPS papers in the ACM DL.

  7. SIG issues

  8. We discussed possible interviews partially underwritten by the SIGs.

  9. DL and Turing Award site

  10. David had previously sent a summary of discussions he had with Wayne and Mark. The ACM web site is moving towards databases, such as containing volunteer contact information. Wayne will be looking into generating searches from the Turing Award pages into the DL, which will be aided by the name normalization project currently underway.

Mark is looking into adding MemberNet (which is now digital) to the DL and to creating an annual electronic publication of key ACM people.

Finally, Mark is working on backfilling auxiliary material in CACM.

  11. Archive

  12. A draft "request for responses" is being circulated, then will be sent to Pat for action.

  13. American Museum of Natural History

  14. Rick reported that the last task, of generating a transcript for a Whirlwind discussion, is ongoing.

  15. Interviewers needed

  16. Mike volunteered to interview Michael Rabin and Juris Hartmanis for travel and expenses, by summer 2008. (Thanks, Mike!)

  17. Next Conference Calls

  18. We decided that the next few conference calls will continue on Thursdays at 4pm EDT.
