December 2008 Conference Call

History Committee Conference Call, December 11, 2008, 4:00-5:00 PM Eastern Time

Participants
: Bill Aspray, Mary Hall, Carol Hutchins, Tom Misa, Len Shustek, Rick Snodgrass, and David S. Wise
  1. We welcomed Tom Misa to the History Committee.

  2. Tom indicated that he still didn't have access to the internal pages of the HC web site. Rick volunteered to have Matt work with him to get that.
Tom mentioned three connections with the HC.

    • He and other CBI staff are currently going through all the ACM Archive paper materials at the CBI.

    • He wishes to reach out to the ACM SIGs to encourage them to submit materials relevant to *their* histories. He was encouraged to discuss this with Brent to understand the issues.

    • He would like to develop a network of institutions that are collecting and archiving material concerning the history of computing, as the CBI can't possibly do it all.

    • He welcomed thoughts about an "email machine" that would serve as a research tool to study emails related to history.

  3. We planned the February 2009 face-to-face meeting at the Computer History Museum.

  4. The meeting will be 9am-4pm on Friday, February 6, 2009. Lunch will be catered, so that we can work through lunch.

  5. ACM Digital Archive

  6. The archive is available. Procedures are needed to place material in this archive, including procedures for "automatic" submission of the web site of ACM-sponsored conferences. Policies are needed for submission and access.

  7. AFIPS proceedings in the DL.

  8. The AFIPS proceedings are now in the DL, with full metadata. The committee thanked Bernie Rous and the ACM Pubs staff and the CHM for their combined efforts to make this valuable resource available.

  9. Action item list.

  10. We completed the pass through this list, relative to Mary, Rosemary, Len, Rick, and David. Only items for Carole and Pat left to review.
