May 2009 Conference Call

History Committee Conference Call, May 21, 2009, 4:00-5:00 PM Eastern Time

Participants
: Brent Hailpern, Mary Hall, Carol Hutchins, Tom Misa, Len Shustek, Rick Snodgrass, and David S. Wise
  1. Selecting the winner of the fellowship

  2. We decided that the recipient could use the fellowship funds for either a small stipend, for travel reimbursement, or a combination thereof. As there are tax implications, the fellowship award letter should leave this up to the discretion of the recipient. However, a process is needed to handle the specifics of getting the funds to the recipient.

After a discussion of the four fellowship proposals, the committee ranked those proposals.

The committee was heartened that a reasonable number of good proposals was received.

  3. Status and planning for Turing Award website

  4. David has been trying to connect with Kelly Gotleib; the goal is to collaborate on selecting a Curator-in-Chief.

We decided that Plan A would be to coordinate with the Awards Committee.

Failing that, we go to Plan B: preparing a call for nominations at our August CC and distributing it at the SGB on October 26 if needed.

  5. Discussion of the SIGOPS timeline

  6. It was agreed that this is a nice structure. However, it would be even easier to keep up to date if it were a wiki.

  7. A few other updates and date for next meeting

  8. Mary announced that Martin Campbell-Kelly agreed to serve on the History Committee. His term starts ???.

Our next meeting will be August 25, 2009 at 4pm ET, with following meetings the last Tuesday of each month.

  9. Planning for next year (identify key projects)

  10. Mary asked the committee to think about new projects over the summer.
